We have devoted several previous blogs to the effects of smoking especially cigarettes.  Here we will concentrate on other forms of tobacco use or substitutes for smoking.

Cigar Smoking is no safer than cigarettes. cigars

According to the Mayo Clinic (see mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/quit-smoking/expert-answers/cigar-smoking/faq-20057787) cigar smoking exposes you to nicotine.  Nicotine is addictive. A single full size cigar contains as much nicotine as does a pack of cigarettes.   Secondhand smoke from cigars contains the same toxic chemicals as secondhand cigarette smoke.

Health risks from cigars include:  Cancer including cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus and larynx, Lung and Heart disease and oral disease such as gum disease and loss of teeth.

Pipe SmokingPipe

Many people have the misconception that smoking a pipe doesn’t pose the same dangers as smoking cigarettes. However, the same harmful chemicals are present in both cigarette and pipe smoke, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov. Smoking a pipe increases your risk for several types of cancer, heart disease, circulatory problems and lung disease.

Chewing tobacco and other forms of smokeless tobacco are harmful and addictive.Chewing Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco products that are chewed sucked on or sniffed result in some of the same risks as cigarettes.  All tobacco products contain nicotine and can result in:   Addiction, cancer, precancerous mouth lesions, heart disease and stroke, dental disease, if used during pregnancy increase the risk of stillbirths, low birth weight and heart rate variability in infants, and poisoning risk for children.

Hookah smoking:  the tobacco in a hookah pipe is no less toxic than in a cigarette.hookah

Hookah smokers are exposed to more carbon monoxide and smoke than cigarette smokers.  Additionally pipes used in hookah bars and cafes may not be cleaned properly and could spread infectious diseases. ( Mayo Clinic).

Nicotine and secondhand smoke are the same as for cigarette smoking and present the same exposure to addiction, cancers, lung and heart disease, and complications for the pregnant woman.

E-Cigarettes – There is no scientific evidence that using e-cigarettes is safe. e-cigarettes

The FDA and many health care organizations including the  American Heart Association (heart.org) and the American Lung Association (lung.org) have issued warnings about the health risks of e-cigarettes.  Starting in August 2016, the FDA began to apply and enforce key provisions of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act as it relates to the sales, marketing and manufacturing of e-cigarettes.

The Surgeon General concluded that e-cigarettes use among youth is now a significant public health concern and steps must be taken by parents, educators and policymakers to discourage use of e-cigarettes.  Furthermore, e-cigarettes can expose users to several potentially harmful chemicals, including nicotine, carbonyl compounds and volatile organic compounds.

The American Lung Association has found that almost all e-cigarettes contain nicotine.  Nicotine  use during adolescence and our adulthood has been associated with lasting cognitive and behavioral impairments, including effects on working memory and attention.  Other chemicals have been discovered in detectable levels of toxic cancer-causing chemicals, including an ingredient used in anti-free and formaldehyde.  The flavorings in e-cigarettes are another cause for concern as these have also been found to cause disease

E-cigarettes expose others to secondhand emissions and the surgeon general has concluded that e-cigarette emissions are not harmless.  .

As to the argument that e-cigarettes can help someone stop smoking,  the American Lung

Association does not support their use for cessation or any direct or implied claims that they help smokers quit.

The bottom line is e-cigarettes are a tobacco product  and impact public health especially given the dramatic increase in use among youth.

There is no safe form of tobacco!  Make a decision to quit now and let Hypnosis to quit smoking help you.
